In this article I will share my thoughts about the Nuun Sport Hydration Tabs that provide you with electrolytes and vitamins during endurance exercise activities. I will try to compare with the Maxim Total Hydrations tabs and the Born Sportscare Watts & Minerals.

Key features Nuun Sport Hydration Tabs
On the Nuun Sport product page you can read that Nuun Sport Hydration tablets are described as:
Nuun Sport provides a great balance of ingredients for mineral replenishment and optimal hydration before/during/after your workout.
- Serious hydration when you break a sweat
- Optimized electrolytes for an active life
- Can aid in normal muscle function
Normally when taking two water bottles on the bike, one normally contains some energy drink while the other contains some thirst quencher. Amacx Isotonic Sports drink can be dosed as a rehydration drink and Born Sportscare Drink is also isotonic, and aimed at keeping you hydrated.
But on the road or on the singletrack the little container with Nuun Sport Hydration tabs, is easy to carry in your jersey pocket. I’m also using the Nuun Sport Hydration tabs on other sports activities like hiking or running. The minerals that are part of the electrolytes-mix are personally more important, simply because the powercurve significantly drops (as I’ve learned in The Secret of Cycling)
Personally I like the flavor, which is certainly not to sweet or intense. It is even less than these bottles of water with a flavor that you can buy in the super market. The height of the container is +/- 10 cm with a diameter of 3 cm. (in comparison the Born Sportscare Watts & Minerals is +/- 14,5 cm heigh, with the same diameter of 3 cm.)
Nutritional value Facts Nuun Sport Hydration Tabs
From an energy perspective the nutritional value is almost zero, however as you look at the electrolyte numbers from a [% Daily Value] perspective, than 1 Nuun Sport Tab will give you up to 13% of the daily value needed off a nutrient line item:
NUTRITIONAL VALUE | PER TAB (5 gr.) |
---|---|
Energy | 15 cal |
Fat | 0 g. |
Carbohydrates | 4 g. |
of which sugars | 1 g. |
Fibre | 0 g. |
Proteins | 0 g. |
Sodium | 300 mg. |
Calcium | 13 mg. |
Magnesium | 25 mg. |

This table will be particularly helpful in the future when other hydration tabs are “compared”. 🙂
Nuun Sport Hydration Tabs versus Maxim Total Hydration or Born Sportscare Watts & Minerals
Well how do the Nuun Sport Hydration tabs compare to some other brands with electrolyte tabs in their product portfolio ? I will review a couple of these in the future:
Maxim Total Hydration Tabs are available for a price point of € 6,80 for a cylinder with 10 tabs. The huge advantage of the Maxim Total Hydration Tabs is that some carbo hydrates are added, and thus the energy is slightly higher. Only available in orange flavor, so you are limited in taste. And the container is bigger (the the Nuun).
BORN Sportscare Watts & Minerals is available for in the price range € 8,50 – € 11,50 for a cylinder with 20 tabs. The per tab prices is good, while the ingredient “WATTS’UP” is a unique addition in these tabs.
WATTS’UP is an all natural citrus fruit extract designed to improve power and energy in trained athletes and sporty people”
The cylinder with BORN tabs is longer, and less convenient for putting in your jersey pocket.
Another sports nutrition brand is Amacx, with their Amacx Hydro tabs. The Amacx Hydro Tabs com in a set of 3 containers, each containing 20 tabs. The overall price point is € 18,00 for 3 containers of 20 tabs, which would mean € 6,00 per cylinder of tabs. This would be one of the cheaper options, while the cylinder size is similar to BORN Sportscare.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The Nuun Sport Hydration Tabs have a price-point of around € 8,00 for a small container with 10 tabs. I personally think it is fair, but there will also be cheaper options available. I like the compact size of the container (roughly the size of a CO2 cartridge), providing you with the option to take it in your cycling jersey.
I also like the minimum flavor added to the water, which is certainly not sweet or intense. That’s why you have the energy drinks to keep you fueled. Amacx Isotonic Sports drink or Rehydration drink and NatuSport Isotonic Sports drink Red Fruit are my personal favorite energy drinks.
I’m trying to find some more scientific background information about the WattsUp ingredient of the Born Sportscare Watts & Minerals. So I can make a better informed comparison. But for now the Maxim Total Hydration Tabs have slightly more energy (carbohydrates) but is bigger in terms of container and tab volume. The Nuun Sport Hydration tabs are easy to digest (especially in warm weather) and the keep your body hydrated for a fair price.
