In this article I will review the Boeshield T-9 chain lube which is made by Boeing. Boeshield T-9 is already long on the market and I will try to objectively share my thoughts and comparing Boeshield with other chain lubes reviewed on this website (Cera Bike, Smoove, Morgan Blue, Dynamic).

Key features Boeshield T-9 Chain Lube
On the Boeshield T-9 Chain Lube product page for bike you can read the key description:
[…] Boeshield T-9 flushes out dirt and old lubricants, displaces moisture and penetrates moving parts in between the rollers and pins on drive chains, carrying the paraffin formula deep into these areas and coating them thoroughly. T-9 dries to a clean, continuous wax film that performs better than teflon and lasts up to 200 miles without picking up dust, dirt or mud.
The fun part is that on the Boeshield website you can also read about the other application areas:
- Bike
- Marine
- Automotive
- Industrial
- Tools
- RV & Trailer
- General Use
Same product, many application areas, that almost feels like a swiss army knife for many use-cases in and around the house. But what is unique for cycling ?
According to Boeing, Boeshield T-9 Chain Lube:
- Reaches deeper. Boeshield T-9 stays liquid long enough to permeate metal crevices and seep deep inside assembled components to leave a durable protective coating that lubricates and protects—all without dismantling your equipment.
- Completely waterproof. Boeshield T-9 dries to a clean, waxy, waterproof film that won’t wash off in rain, puddles or mud. You can rinse away sand, dust and grime with water, while leaving the lubricant intact.
- One step to long-term protection. Apply Boeshield T-9 to any metal surface and let it dry. One simple step gives you a thin, penetrating film of durable, waterproof protection and lubrication that endures, month after month, mile after mile
I still recall the La Marmotte raceday which was terrible rainy weather all day long. However I recall that my drive train was still going strong, and free of funny noises when going up Alp d’Huez towards the finish line. Given the very-close-to-water viscosity it will perfectly distribute in and over the Shimano HG chain links.
Using Boeshield T-9 Lube on your Bike Chain
Apply and allow to penetrate for at least 2 hours (preferably overnight) to guarantee full penetration. After penetration simply wipe off excess, leaving a clean thin film that will not wash off or pick up dirt. Inside all the small parts of your chain it will leave a waterproof lubrication that will last for hundreds of miles.
I stick to the application the night before I will ride my bike(s). The current 118 ml. bottle has a nozzle head that is opened up just with a quarter turn. The application nozzle feels a bit like the Cera Bike Wax Lube nozzle, although I prefer a smaller application nozzle like Smoove Lube or the precision needle application nozzle from Wolf Tooth WT-1 chain lube. But in the end, the nozzle works. Boeshield is very fluid like water (viscosity) and for me one of the reasons for deep penetration in the chain links.
Simply let it dry and grab your bike the day after. Boeshield T-9 is that simple for me when it comes to application. I have some long standing positive and good experience with using it on my road bikes (going back to my Giant TCR Advanced days). I will continue to do some testing on the single tracks and gravel roads as well.
Please note for cleaning the the Muc-Off X3 Dirty Chain machine is my best friend. Solid and thorough cleaning is always key to gain the best lubrication benefits as well.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
I have been using Boeshield T-9 on and off, but for a long time frame. It is a very very nice chain lube that I apply the evening before I go out to ride. The hardened wax-like film does the job of keeping the drive train running smoothly.
The price point of 118 ml bottle of Boeshield T-9 is around € 16,95 (check out Koers.cc) which is very reasonable for a high quality chain lube developed by Boeing. 🙂 It is a similar price point as the Spoke Works Smoove Chain Lube, which also reminded me a lot about Boeshield T-9 (and is the main reason for this review). Cera Bike Wax Lube and Morgan Blue Extra Dry Lube are cheaper, but might have different characteristics.
- Have you ever used Boeshield T-9 Chain Lube?
- What were your experiences with the product?
- If you use another chain lube, I’m curious to learn which one?

About Boeshield
Forty years ago, the world’s largest aerospace builder—The Boeing Company—needed access to a more reliable metal protectant/lubricant that could withstand long exposure to a corrosive environment.
Their research revealed that Teflon, silicone and synthetic sprays were all inadequate for the task, so they developed a better product of their own. The result was Boeshield T-9, the only product of its type to be licensed by The Boeing Company. T-9’s unique formulation of solvents and waxes was engineered to penetrate metal crevices deeply, displace moisture, dissolve minor corrosion, and leave a clean, waxy coating with long-lasting durability.
