In this article I will review the Knipex Electronic Super Knips with product number 78 61 125, that is the perfect tool to cut zip ties and press cable end-caps onto the shifting inner cables. For me it is one of these basic tools that have use-cases for cycling but also beyond that.

Knipex is synonym for high quality tools, pliers especially. While there are other high quality engineering companies out there with well designed plier, Knipex is still the default go-to brand when it comes to pliers. It is not just the heart from a mechanical engineer on a bike, but also the long history and innovation that have come from the Knipex brand (and company).
I purchased the Knipex Electronic Super Knips for two main use cases:
- Cutting a tie-wrap with the Electronic Super Knips;
- Pressing the end-caps on a derailleur cable;
Years ago I simply used an ordinary side cutter to cut a tie-wrap, back in the days when you installed a cadence or speed sensor on your fork or frame. Of course back than I made an angled cut of the tie-wrap, with a resulting cut in the skin on my leg. The Electronic Super Knips has a clean cut and can be done very close to the rattle-head of the tie-wrap.
While most major cable cutting brands have a feature in the pliers, to press the end-caps on the derailleur cable, I personally prefer the Knipex Electronic Super Knips. If you squeeze the endcaps on two places it will hold forever, and the feeling on the applied force is simply amazing. Smooth and precise ! Park Tool CN-10 Cable Cutter also has this end-cap press but I never use that function, despite it is one of the best cable cutters on the market.
And as said many many use cases outside of cycling, but and and around the house are possible. It is simply one of these tools you need to have in your home mechanic tool box or tool cabinet.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price-point of the Knipex Electronic Super Knips with product number 78 31 125 is around 20,00. Not cheap, but it is a quality tool that will last and stay sharp (if you use it with intended use in mind 0,2 – 1,0 mm wires).
I have a default set with Knipex pliers in the Cocoon Grid-It Organizer inside a Bera Clic toolbox. The Super Knips has its own place, and will even go in a lightweight tool roll if you go out cycling for just a couple of days.
- Would you invest in the Knipex Electronic Super Knips?
