Muc-Off Copper Compound Review

In this article I will review Muc-Off Copper Compound (paste) that I always use on the axle threads of the Shimano XTR PD-M9100 SPD pedals and Speedplay Zero pedals (on the road bike). I will try to share my thoughts and compare it with other (grease) options like Morgan Blue Aquaproof Paste.

Key features Muc-Off Copper Compound Paste

On the Muc-Off product page of Copper Compound Paste the following description can be found:

Copper Compound paste make stuck threaded screw connections and tight metal joints are a thing of the past. Simply apply it to threaded, plug and screw connections that are especially exposed to corrosion. The copper-based assembly paste reliably prevents contact corrosion and resulting damages on threaded connections and metal parts.

Apart from protecting bottom bracket, headset and thru axle threads, the assembly paste also keeps sensitive components running smoothly. It helps reduce friction and thus prevents creaking and cracking noises on seatpost and cranks.

I have always been using copper paste on the thread of steel pedal axles that go into the aluminum Shimano Hollowtech II crankarms. This practice has always allowed me to easily and safely remove the pedals with limited force applied. Even a short Gedore VDE 894 15 single open ended spanner does the pedal wrench job than ! In summary Muc-Off Copper Compound is perfect for metal connections of steel, titanium, aluminium.

What I directly noticed on the product page as being listed as a key feature is that Muc-Off Copper Compound is salt water resistant. So if you do a lot of riding on the beach, than it is worth investigating a couple of use-cases, especially because it does not attack metal, carbon, plastic and rubber.

Personally I think there is overlap with a couple of other maintenance products that I really like to use. Morgan Blue Aquaproof Paste is probably the most competitive one, with similar use-cases. But the feel, composition and viscosity are completely different. So good to understand that saltwater protection is a good Muc-Off Copper Compound. For the more fast moving parts and bearings I tend to use Motorex Bike Grease 2000.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point for 450 grams of Anti-Seize Muc-Off Copper Compound paste is around € 25,00 – € 30,00. This is not cheap, but Muc-Off provides premium quality products that are well engineered. I have been using their Biogrease also for a long time, as the default go-to allround grease but the price point was also higher than some of the competition. Please also check out the Muc-Off X3 Dirty Chain Machine review !

For as long as I can remember there is one use case where I would always use Muc-Off Copper Compound paste, and that is on the threads of your pedal axles (road, mountain bike and gravel). So it keeps the Shimano XTR PD-M9100 and Speedplay Zero pedals safe from corrosion effects (making it very tough to loosen them from the crank arms).

  • Do you use any anti-seize copper past during assembly ?
  • In which usage scenarios do you apply it ?
  • Would you use Muc-Off Copper Compound ?
